6 Truly Terrifying Technologies

Halloween is nearly here, so all the ghosts and goblins are out on display in stores and in overzealous neighborhood yards. But we found some technology that is truly terrifying. Reader beware: some of the information and images below may haunt you. The following material is not for the faint of heart.

Ghost Radar
We ain’t afraid of no ghosts! But for the aspiring ghostbusters among us, what better way to prove your fearlessness than to track down a few wandering spirits? Download the Ghost Radar app to your mobile phone to start finding apparitions.

Terrifying in Genuinely Horrifying Ways

Robot Swarms
We’re not living in the world of the Matrix just yet, but robot swarms are a reality. Researchers are developing hive-minded machines that can interact and make decisions without human direction. While this reality can’t help but evoke thoughts of the singularity, we can’t help but think it’s still pretty cool. Creepily cool.

Real-time Satellite Surveillance
Do you ever get the feeling you’re being watched? You just might be. As satellites are getting more sophisticated and less expensive, they are more accessible to greater numbers of organizations, corporations, and maybe even private citizens (with enough money).  Who will decide who is monitored and what checks and balances may be used? Terrifying.

State-sponsored Hacktivism and “Soft War”
“Would you like to play a game?” WOPR, the supercomputer in the 1983 movie War Games, took the US and the Soviet Union to the brink of global nuclear war. In the 80s it was considered entertaining fiction, but today, who knows? As we become increasingly dependent on technology for national defense, we risk states and independent actors hacking into our systems. And there is an increasing threat of soft war attacks on cultures, values, and systems. Horrifying.
